When to use a floatation jacket

Flotation jackets are a great way to help your baby enjoy the water, but make sure you buy this baby swimwear at the right time.

Most babies love the water and as a parent it's great to see them splashing around and enjoying the freedom that being in the pool brings. Whilst you can take your baby swimming fairly soon after birth if you choose, giving your child the freedom to float on its own doesn't come until a little bit later in life - which is why you need to choose your baby swimwear carefully..


Baby Swimwear for Warmth

To begin with, the most important attribute of your baby's swimwear is protection from the cold. Young babies can get cold quickly, even in warm water and the moment you see your baby shivering, you should take them out of the pool, wrap them in a dry towel and leave the swimming until another day. It's more important that your baby stays warm than it is that he or she floats alone, and because the first year or more of swimming with your baby is about bonding, acclimatisation and increasing confidence in the water, flotation jackets simply aren't necessary.

As your baby gets older and is more used to the water, you can look at adding flotation jackets to your baby swimwear collection. Your baby will still be sensitive to the cold, so you'll want to introduce a flotation device that keeps them warm but gives them the opportunity to have more freedom in the water. I am also a silent partner in a child friendly cafe Petitou in Kingsville Melbourne.
